Xylene CAS 1330-20-7
Xylene, chemical formula C8H10, a mixture of xylene or xylene aromatic hydrocarbons, consisting of a benzene ring with two methyl groups at different locations. There are three isomers: orthoxylene (CAS number 95-47-6), orthoxylene (CAS number 108-38-3), and paraxylene (CAS number 106-42-3). The three isomers of xylene, C8H10, or by the semi-structural formula C6H4(CH3)2. In industry, xylene refers to a mixture of these isomers.
Xylene is a major petrochemical produced in the manufacture of coke fuel from coal by catalytic reforming. It makes up about 0.5-1% of crude oil and is found in small batches of gasoline and aircraft fuel. From the extracted product of catalytic reforming called "reforming oil", xylene is the main product as part of BTX aromatics (xylene, benzene and toluene). The mixture is a slightly greasy, colorless liquid that is used as a solvent. Xylene was named in 1851 after it was discovered as a component of wood tar. Millions of tons are produced every year. In 2011, in Singapore, a global consortium began construction of the world's largest xylene plant.
